Since January 2006, Small Planet has worked for the Guyana Trade and
Investment Support (GTIS) project, acting as the Director of the
Guyana Sustainable Tourism Initiative (GSTI).
GTIS is a joint project of USAID and the Government of Guyana and
implemented by
CARANA Corporation. After a successful
Phase 1, has now been extended until 2013. Originally focused on bird
watching tourism, GSTI has recently been expanded to include other
sustainable tourism niche markets. It combines community-driven,
market-responsive and partnership approaches, and has enjoyed many
successes.
Beginning
in August 2009 and extending to September 2010, Small Planet is also acting
as Tourism Value Chain Leader for
The
Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion (EDIP)
project. Also implemented by CARANA, this USAID-funded project us devoted to
the development of all Palestinian economic sectors that foster rapid
economic growth and employment opportunities.
Small
Planet’s other recent projects include an agri-tourism development strategy
for St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and a number of projects in Guyana:
a Conservation International, Guyana-IDB community tourism entrepreneurship
project, an Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and
Development-IDB regional marketing initiative, a Canadian International
Development Agency (CIDA) indigenous tourism development initiative, and a
good practices for ecotourism initiative for the British High Commission
Guyana, which included publishing the world’s first birding tours good
practices self-assessment checklist. All of the Guyana projects focus on the
Rupununi region, an area that has been compared to the Serengeti and the
Galapagos for its biodiversity and richness of wildlife, and include high
participation by indigenous communities.
